Even without his rough demeanor and way of speaking, Gara cuts an intimidating figure. He’s medium-height and lean, but over 90% of his body is necrotic and discolored through rot, like an old corpse. The remaining 10% is a sliver on his face. Blackwork tattoos are self-done on much of his body, including his face. His teeth are sharp and jagged, and with his bright blue hair and red eyes, he’s outlandish looking, even in the circles he runs in.
He dresses in ‘airtight outfits’, but its really just dark colors, a lot of straps and buckles. He likes to keep his cowl and hood up to hide his face, and Yuki Minano is the only person he can undress around. That latter point is such that he needs Yuki around when he undresses because of his volatile, Handead nature.
To come back to that rough demeanor, people treated Gara like he’s a rabid dog, something to fear and be disgusted by. So he leans into that, talking rudely and derisively to most. Mad dog Handead, beware!!

Gara puts himself into his various areas of work with a kind of fervor and competence one might not expect from him; he's young, but he knows what needs to be done, and he's quick to act. When he was only thirteen, he was the golden boy of the organization he worked and performed under at least for a little while; it took a lot of hard work to get recognized enough to put himself on the track to being Head of a new branch.
In the years since his abandonment by said organization (DAA, or DEAD AND ALIVE), he's found new passions, new ambitions. Tattooing and body mods bring in steady work, but he's still as dedicated as ever to his singing and performing and the group he now does it with.
He just might like to appear a little more aloof than he actually is, shown to get embarrassed and angry when his childhood friend, Yuki, told another friend, Tengai, that Gara was getting embarrassed at Tengai's admission of friendship.

As any handead is, Gara is prone to emotional outbursts when his dead level rises; however, his seems to rise much faster than anyone else's, and at much smaller provocations. He's easily excitable, easily angered, and easily triggered into flashbacks.
Gara does what he wants when he wants to; he tends to want to bite. When he used to perform, he was prone to jumping into the crowds to bite anyone within reach. He enjoys picking fights, too; nearly as much as he loves yelling at people and scaring them off -- as with a creep leering at Genjiro's niece, Chacha.
Gara calls himself "free" above all else. Unfettered by the chains DAA used to shackle him with, Gara — again — does what he wants. With Shura Jodo, he can shake things up and make people uncomfortable, make them challenge the status quo. As he values freedom above all else, he'd similarly never do anything to step on anyone else's freedom.
It's unconceivable to him. While he doesn't seem the type, he doesn't want people to go through what he went through, especially people closest to him. So no one is under any more obligation, with Gara, than they have to be.
He's also shown to be impressed by displays of assertiveness and confidence, as shown when Deki Hakushima stood up to him and told him he'd change his mind about DAA on stage. While he wasn't convinced, it still left an impression on him.
Gara would quicker preserve himself than he would preserve most others; he's not the "take me, not them" type. It ties in to the aforementioned free-spirit of his. He doesn't want his freedom or anyone else's contingent on his or another's mercy.
Troubled might not be a character flaw, but the way Gara acts out on it might be. He's explosive more so than implosive, prone to lashing out when his trauma comes up -- as demonstrated when Raiga Waziki approached him to talk to him about the missing father figure of theirs, Kakeru Miyoshi. Even when Raiga attempted to tell him he wasn't scared of him -- something Kakeru told him a long time ago -- he lashed out. It might've been assuring and a balm, but it only made him angrier.

TRAIT: PHYSIOLOGY
Trait of Handead, increased sensations of pleasure and pain. He also has a Dead Point; most Handead Dead Points are reduced to a small area of the body, like a hand or the throat, but this can vary. Gara's body is 90% Dead Point, with only a pale sliver on his face that isn't necrotic.
TRAIT: INFLUENCER
Trait of what's called a Influencer-Handead (and only Influencers); able to turn the living into a half-dead/"half-zombie" Handead like himself. He can also undo brainwashing of Alivers with his beautiful singing voice. Once this is done, his bite can turn them Handead like him. However, they won't be an Influencer and won't have the conversion instincts/abilities.
TRAIT: EMOTIONS
Trait of Handead; increased emotion-intensity, to the point of his dead level rising. This is dangerous because it attracts Crazy Bees, and he acts out impulsively and on emotion alone. His sclera will turn red and his irises silver.
backstory;
WORLD INFO
In the year marked at 21xx, there are Handead, Zendead, and Alivers. Alivers are 50% of the population, and have been brainwashed to focus only on their work, listless and devoid of joy. The other 50% is Handead or Zendead; Handeads are called "truly living", though physically, they're "half-dead". There's an organization called Dead And Alive, or DAA, who works to undo the brainwashing through the production of music, as Influencer Handead can undo the brainwashing with their voices and turn them Handead through their bites. Zendead are basically listless zombies without the urge to eat human flesh.
BACKSTORY
At age 13, he was set to be the next Head of the Okayama branch, but this was short-lived. As he's a bit of a danger with his constantly fluctuating dead level, he was kicked out of DAA after he was saved by Kakeru from a Crazy Bee attack during a performance.
While Gara was always emotionally volatile and prone to outbursts, the abandonment here just made him more explosive and doubly so when Kakeru disappeared entirely. Kakeru often told Gara he wasn't afraid of his dead level's fluctuating and the very real threat he posed; it was because of this that Gara really learned he was more than just bee-bait.
At the current canon point here, Gara has joined up with another father figure of his, Genjiro Chibana, and his childhood friend, Yuki Minano, to form a group called Shura Jodo. Their aim is to shake things up and show Alivers and newly-turned Handead they don't need to follow the DAA's every word and scripture.
